A needle minder is a cross stitch accessory for keeping track of your needle when it’s not in use. It usually consists of three components: a decorative piece and two magnets. The decorative piece is typically a small, flat object like a button or charm, while the magnet is attached to the back of it. Another magnet is placed underneath your fabric, with the fabric sandwiched in between.
There are many different designs and styles of needle minders available, allowing you to personalize your cross stitch project. They serve not only a functional purpose but also add a decorative touch to your work
How to Use a Needle Minder
To use a needle minder, place the decorative piece on the front of your fabric and align it with the magnet underneath. The front piece will attract the back piece and the magnets will snap together.
When you need to set your needle aside, attach it to the magnet on the front of the fabric. This will keep your needle secure, preventing it from getting lost or accidentally poking you. When you’re ready to get back to stitching, it’s easy to remove your needle from the needle minder because it’s magnetized.

What Are Other Uses for Needle Minders?
Don’t need a needle minder to hold your needle? No problem. Needle minders have numerous uses other than their intended purpose.
Use needle minders to park your floss. Working on full coverage pieces requires lots of different threads to be worked on simultaneously.
If you don’t stay organized your threads can easily get tangled. However, if you keep the strands separated with needle minders you won’t have to worry about knotted floss.
You can use needle minders to hold your pattern open while you work. Attach your needle minder to lamps and other metal surfaces to hold your stitching supplies.
How to Make Your Own Needle Minders
All needle minders will consist of 3 parts: a base and 2 magnets. Your base can pretty much consist of anything.
Try using buttons, pinback buttons, scrabble tiles, Legos, clay figures, jewelry, basically anything with a flat surface area to attach the magnet.

What is the Best Magnet for a Needle Minder?
The best magnets to use for your needle minders are neodymium magnets or rare earth magnets. They are SUPER STRONG! Be careful when putting two magnets together. The magnetic pull can pinch your fingers.
I have a bunch of various sizes. I use a bigger one on the base to cover the most surface area and a smaller one to hold to my fabric.
This will vary depending on the surface area of your base and how heavy it is. It’s just my little tip to conserve magnets.
DO NOT use ceramic magnets. Yes, they are cheaper, but they don’t always hold and may leave marks on your fabric!
What is the Best Glue for a Needle Minder?
Strong magnets need strong glue. E6000 is the best glue for needle minders. It offers a long-term, permanent hold.
How do I know this? Mistakes were made.
Before I had E6000, I tried other “permanent” glues in a pinch. Eventually, my magnet would fall off.
The last thing you would want is to lose your needle minder.
However, there are some things you’ll want to consider when using this glue.
Use this glue in a well-ventilated area. This stuff stinks! There are warnings on the back because of the chemicals.
Keep in mind that the dry time is 24 hours so you’ll want to wait to use your needle minder. The recommended time for a maximum bond and curing time is 72 hours.

The best magnets to use for needle minders are neodymium magnets, aka rare earth magnets. They are super strong so be careful with them. They will magnetize to everything they can reach.
Use the strongest glue that you can, again I recommend E6000, otherwise your magnets will fall off and you may lose your needle minder.
